Bear checked his mirrors as his mind raced, ignoring Cardovo’s quiet whimpering. There seemed to be no one following them, but traffic was heavy and he couldn’t tell. He took random turns, lefts, rights, and raced through a few red lights. With his left hand he checked that his Glock’s mag was full. It was. There had been no time to return fire.

Ditch the vehicle. That took priority over finding a hotel. He headed back to Hollywood Boulevard, knowing that the usual horde of tourists would slow down any followers. He cut a quick left and entered a hotel’s drive. A boutique hotel that he knew well. He drove to its parking lot and went to a space in a far corner and kept watch.

‘What’re we doing here?’ Cardovo moaned.

‘We need to find a ride,’ Bear replied, without looking at him. The principal was curled in his seat as if warding off a blow. An odor emanated from him, a smell that Bear knew well.

It was fear.
